Pattern/Configuration Analysis — Advanced Interpretation of the Destiny Chart Structure

Pattern/Configuration Analysis — Advanced Interpretation of the Destiny Chart Structure

I. From the Particular to the Whole: Why We Need Pattern/Configuration Theory

Through the systematic study presented in the preceding chapters, the reader has already mastered the fundamental procedure of BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) analysis: arranging the Four Pillars, labeling the Ten Gods, assessing the strength of the Day Master, and establishing the Useful God and the Unfavorable God. This analytical method — taking the strength or weakness of the Day Master as its point of departure and the logic of support-and-restraint balance as its core — is the indispensable path of entry into destiny studies and serves as the basic framework for the vast majority of Destiny Chart analyses.

Yet as you begin to encounter a wider range of real Destiny Charts, you may gradually perceive a problem: the strength or weakness of the Day Master and the selection of the Useful God alone are sometimes insufficient to account for the full information contained within a chart. Two Destiny Charts with similar Day Master strength and identical Useful God orientations — why does one seem entirely unremarkable while the other carries an exceptional quality? One person lives in obscurity throughout their life, while another leaves their name in history. This difference in "caliber" cannot be captured by the arithmetic of elemental forces alone.

This is what gives rise to the advanced analytical dimension of BaZi — Pattern/Configuration theory.

If assessing the Day Master's strength or weakness is "taking the pulse," and establishing the Useful God and Unfavorable God is "writing the prescription," then analyzing destiny through Pattern/Configuration is the comprehensive grasp of the entire Destiny Chart's "atmosphere and bearing" — its concern is not the strength or weakness of any single element within the Five Elements, but rather the structural quality, the directional momentum, and the precision of coordination of the chart as a whole. A Pattern/Configuration is like the overall architectural design of a building: two structures may employ the same materials (with similar Five Elements forces), yet one is a meticulously designed palace hall while the other is a hastily constructed shed. What determines the difference in their quality is precisely the design logic of the structure itself.

The essence of Pattern/Configuration theory lies in a holistic perspective. It requires the analyst to step beyond localized calculations of Five Elements strength and to approach the chart from its overall architecture, grasping the direction of the flowing momentum and the degree to which its meridians are unobstructed. This represents a higher order of destiny-analytical thinking and constitutes the critical threshold separating the beginner from the advanced student.

II. The Theoretical Origins of Pattern/Configuration Analysis

The intellectual tradition of Pattern/Configuration analysis has deep roots in the history of BaZi's development. As early as the Tang and Song dynasties, destiny scholars began to notice that the Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar — that is, the month command — not only determined the distribution of strength and weakness among the Five Elements forces, but also defined, to a very considerable degree, the "principal keynote" of the entire Destiny Chart.

The Yuanhai Ziping, as the foundational classic of Ziping destiny studies, was the first to systematically advance the principle of determining a Pattern/Configuration by the Heavenly Stems that emerge from the month command, thereby establishing a classification framework for Patterns/Configurations centered on the orthodox types. Subsequently, Wan Minying's Sanming Tonghui of the Ming dynasty inherited this framework and expanded it greatly, enumerating in detail the conditions for the success and failure of various Patterns/Configurations and the rules governing their changes, becoming the most comprehensive classical reference on Pattern/Configuration theory. The Ditiansui annotated by Ren Tieqiao of the Qing dynasty approached the subject from a different angle, emphasizing the circulation of momentum throughout the chart and the harmony of the whole, providing a more flexible philosophical perspective for judging the quality of Patterns/Configurations.

Although the three classics differ in emphasis, they converge on a single core recognition: the quality of a Destiny Chart cannot be measured solely by the strength or weakness of the Day Master; one must also examine whether the Ten Gods Pattern/Configuration governed by the month command has received appropriate coordination and safeguarding. Whether a Pattern/Configuration is established, and at what level, depends on the cooperative relationships among the various Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches within the chart — like a symphony orchestra, where the volume of individual instruments (Five Elements forces) is certainly important, but what ultimately determines the quality of the performance is whether the instruments coordinate harmoniously and whether the structure of the composition is complete.

III. Orthodox Patterns/Configurations: The Eight Basic Types Determined by the Month Command

The most fundamental classification of Patterns/Configurations is the distinction between orthodox and transformed types. Orthodox Patterns/Configurations apply to the great majority of charts and constitute the core body of Pattern/Configuration theory.

The principle for determining an orthodox Pattern/Configuration may be stated simply: the Pattern/Configuration is determined by whichever Heavenly Stem concealed within the month command (i.e., the month's Earthly Branch) emerges into the Heavenly Stems. More specifically, when any of the Heavenly Stems concealed within the Month Pillar's Earthly Branch appears in the year stem, month stem, or hour stem, and when the Ten Gods relationship formed between that stem and the Day Master is neither Shoulder to Shoulder (Rob Wealth) nor Rob Wealth — that is, neither belongs to the category of "same as self" — the Pattern/Configuration is determined by that Ten Gods relationship.

Why must Shoulder to Shoulder (Rob Wealth) and Rob Wealth be excluded? Because the Rob Wealth group shares the same Five Elements nature as the Day Master and does not constitute an independent relational theme; it cannot form a meaningful Pattern/Configuration structure. The essence of a Pattern/Configuration is the relational pattern between the Day Master and external forces, whereas the Rob Wealth group represents "the self" and cannot form a "relationship."

It is necessary here to elaborate further on the details of taking the Pattern/Configuration from the Heavenly Stems concealed within the month command. Within each Earthly Branch there resides not merely one Heavenly Stem, but three layers: the primary qi, the middle qi, and the residual qi. Taking the month command of Yin Wood as an example: the primary qi is Jia (Yang Wood), the middle qi is Bing (Yang Fire), and the residual qi is Wu (Yang Earth). The order of priority for determining the Pattern/Configuration is: first, examine which stems have emerged — among the stems concealed within the month command, those that appear in the year stem, month stem, or hour stem take precedence. If only one stem has emerged, the Pattern/Configuration is determined by the Ten Gods relationship between that stem and the Day Master — this is the clearest and most straightforward situation. If none of the concealed stems have emerged into the Heavenly Stems, the Pattern/Configuration is generally determined by the Ten Gods corresponding to the primary qi of the month command.

A more complex situation is that of "multiple simultaneous emergences" — when two or even three of the stems concealed within the month command have all appeared in the Heavenly Stems at the same time. The basic principle in this case is: priority goes to the stem corresponding to the primary qi, followed by the middle qi, and then the residual qi. If the primary qi has not emerged while both the middle qi and residual qi have each sent a stem through, priority is given to the one corresponding to the middle qi. Another commonly encountered situation is "emergence without purity" — for instance, when both the Direct Officer and the Seven Killings simultaneously emerge, producing what is called "Officer and Killing mixed together," in which case the Pattern/Configuration lacks purity, and one must further assess whether the chart contains coordinating configurations that can clarify the situation (such as combining away the Killing to retain the Officer, or restraining the Killing to retain the Officer, and so forth). In sum, purity is prized in determining a Pattern/Configuration — the simpler and more unambiguous the emerged stem, the better the foundational quality of the Pattern/Configuration.

In this way, the orthodox Patterns/Configurations number eight in total, corresponding respectively to the eight Ten Gods:

The Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration (with the Direct Officer as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Direct Officer within the month command emerges into the Heavenly Stems. The Direct Officer is that which restrains the Day Master while differing from it in Yin and Yang polarity; it represents legitimate governance and social norms. The Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration is one of the most highly regarded in traditional destiny studies; those born with it tend to carry themselves with rectitude and integrity, following rules and conventions, and are well suited to develop within institutional and orderly environments.

The Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) Pattern/Configuration (with the Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) as the Pattern/Configuration), also known as the Seven Killings Pattern/Configuration — the qi of the Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) emerges from the month command. The Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) is that which restrains the Day Master while sharing its Yin and Yang polarity; its force is fierce and intense, like a sharp blade suspended overhead. Those with a Seven Killings Pattern/Configuration tend to be resolute and decisive, willing to take risks; if the Seven Killings is appropriately restrained and transformed, remarkable authority and career achievement can result.

The Direct Wealth Pattern/Configuration (with the Direct Wealth as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Direct Wealth within the month command emerges. Direct Wealth is that which the Day Master restrains while differing from it in Yin and Yang polarity; it represents stable wealth and a pragmatic disposition. Those with a Direct Wealth Pattern/Configuration are diligent and steady, skilled at accumulation, advancing step by step.

The Indirect Wealth Pattern/Configuration (with the Indirect Wealth as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Indirect Wealth within the month command emerges. Indirect Wealth is that which the Day Master restrains while sharing its Yin and Yang polarity; it represents flexible financial opportunities and social ability. Those with an Indirect Wealth Pattern/Configuration are generous and adept at cultivating connections, with business instincts that are often remarkably keen.

The Direct Seal Pattern/Configuration (with the Direct Seal as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Direct Seal within the month command emerges. The Direct Seal is that which generates the Day Master while differing from it in Yin and Yang polarity; it represents maternal protection and orthodox learning. Those with a Direct Seal Pattern/Configuration are gentle and benevolent, studious and reflective; scholarship and education are their natural arena.

The Indirect Seal Pattern/Configuration (with the Indirect Seal as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Indirect Seal within the month command emerges. The Indirect Seal is that which generates the Day Master while sharing its Yin and Yang polarity; it represents unorthodox learning and distinctive inspiration. Those with an Indirect Seal Pattern/Configuration think unconventionally and often produce unexpected insights, though they may also appear solitary and changeable.

The Eating God Pattern/Configuration (with the Eating God as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Eating God within the month command emerges. The Eating God is that which the Day Master generates while sharing its Yin and Yang polarity; it represents the gentle expression of talent and the enjoyment of life. Those with an Eating God Pattern/Configuration tend to be amiable and artistically gifted, carrying through life an easy and unhurried elegance.

The Hurting Officer Pattern/Configuration (with the Hurting Officer as the Pattern/Configuration) — the qi of the Hurting Officer within the month command emerges. The Hurting Officer is that which the Day Master generates while differing from it in Yin and Yang polarity; it represents sharp talent and a rebellious spirit. Those with a Hurting Officer Pattern/Configuration are brilliantly intelligent with an incisive edge; when properly restrained and guided, their creativity and power of breakthrough can reach the highest levels.

Eight orthodox Patterns/Configurations, eight life themes. The logic of the month command determining the Pattern/Configuration is, in essence, to define the central narrative of the Destiny Chart through the relationship between the most powerful external energy field at the moment of birth (the prevailing qi of the month command) and the Day Master — what is the primary mode of interaction between you and the world? To be constrained (Officer/Killing Pattern/Configuration), to be nourished (Seal Pattern/Configuration), to create (Eating God/Hurting Officer Pattern/Configuration), or to control (Wealth Pattern/Configuration)? The Pattern/Configuration provides precisely this fundamental answer.

IV. The Success and Failure of Patterns/Configurations: The Way of Coordination

Once the type of Pattern/Configuration has been established, the next most critical question is: does this Pattern/Configuration succeed or fail?

The "success" of a Pattern/Configuration means that the Ten Gods that determine the Pattern/Configuration have received appropriate coordination and protection from the other Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches within the chart, allowing the theme of the Pattern/Configuration to be fully realized. The "failure" of a Pattern/Configuration means that the determining Ten Gods have been damaged or disrupted by other Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches within the chart, causing the theme of the Pattern/Configuration to be distorted or dismantled.

The conditions for the success or failure of each Pattern/Configuration differ, yet they all embody a common underlying logic. The following examples from several typical Patterns/Configurations illustrate the basic principles of "the way of coordination."

The success and failure of the Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration — What does the Direct Officer most welcome? It welcomes the Direct Seal to protect the Officer and Wealth stars to generate the Officer. The Direct Seal restrains the Hurting Officer, shielding the Direct Officer from harm — like a loyal minister supported by a wise counselor; the Wealth star provides a material foundation for the Direct Officer, giving power something upon which to rely. What does the Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration most dread? It most dreads the appearance of the Hurting Officer — the Hurting Officer directly overcomes the Direct Officer, like a disruptor overturning order entirely, causing the Pattern/Configuration to collapse. It also dreads the mixing of the Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) — when Officer and Killing are mixed, the source of authority is impure, like two rulers over a single domain, producing confusion rather than order. Hence the classical saying: "The Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration welcomes the Seal's protection and Wealth's generation; it dreads the Hurting Officer breaking the Pattern/Configuration and the Seven Killings mixed with the Officer."

The success and failure of the Seven Killings Pattern/Configuration — The force of the Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) is fierce and intense; it must be restrained or transformed before it can be put to use. "Restraint" means using the Eating God to overcome it, subjecting the killing qi to control; "transformation" means using the Direct Seal to transform it — the Killing generates the Seal, the Seal generates the self, transmuting the destructive force into a nourishing one. When the Seven Killings is both restrained and transformed, it is like a fierce tiger brought to heel, capable of great achievement. If the Seven Killings has neither restraint nor transformation, the Day Master is excessively pressured, and the Pattern/Configuration fails.

The success and failure of the Eating God Pattern/Configuration — The Eating God has a gentle and inwardly focused nature; it most welcomes the generation of Wealth — the Eating God generating Wealth transforms talent into tangible material results, which is the ideal coordination. The Eating God Pattern/Configuration most dreads the Indirect Seal — the Indirect Seal overcomes the Eating God, traditionally described as "the owl spirit seizing the food," as if an invisible hand snuffs out the flame of talent, leaving the subject with ability but unable to express it, and with aspirations but unable to fulfill them; the Pattern/Configuration thus fails.

The success and failure of the Hurting Officer Pattern/Configuration — The Hurting Officer is outwardly sharp and full of energy; it requires appropriate guidance. The Hurting Officer generating Wealth transmutes incisive creative power into abundant returns — the Pattern/Configuration succeeds. The Hurting Officer paired with the Seal brings talent under the discipline of learning, turning unruly brilliance into something deep and powerful — the Pattern/Configuration also succeeds. However, if the Hurting Officer meets the Direct Officer — the Hurting Officer and Direct Officer directly in conflict — then "the Hurting Officer meeting the Officer brings a hundred calamities," one of the most classical examples of Pattern/Configuration failure in destiny studies, signifying an irreconcilable conflict between rebellious talent and orthodox order.

From the foregoing examples, we can distill the common logic underlying Pattern/Configuration success and failure: A Pattern/Configuration succeeds through "protection" and "facilitation" — shielding the determining Ten Gods from being overcome and harmed, and facilitating the expression of their energetic nature; a Pattern/Configuration fails through "disruption" and "opposition" — directly striking down the determining Ten Gods, or working against their nature to distort them.

V. The Level of Patterns/Configurations: Weighing Refinement Against Flaws

The establishment of a Pattern/Configuration is the basic threshold; above that, there are further distinctions of "level." The level of a Pattern/Configuration depends on the degree of refinement in its coordination and the abundance or scarcity of its flaws — like two completed paintings, one executed with masterly brushwork and profound artistic conception, the other complete yet somewhat rough; their artistic merit naturally differs.

High-level Pattern/Configuration charts typically exhibit the following characteristics:

First, the Ten Gods that determine the Pattern/Configuration are pure and forceful — the emerged stem is clear, holding power through the month command, and is not confused by mixed influences. For instance, in the Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration, the Direct Officer appears as a single stem without the Indirect Officer (Seven Killings) mixed in — what is called "the officer star unmixed" — which is considered the most noble and distinguished.

Second, the coordinating elements that protect the Pattern/Configuration are precisely calibrated — neither excessive nor deficient, neither skewed nor unbalanced. The Seal star protects the Officer, but the Seal star's own force is moderate, not so overwhelmingly strong that it smothers the Day Master's vitality; the Eating God restrains the Seven Killings, but the force of the Eating God is evenly matched with the Seven Killings, restraining without overdoing. This subtle balance is the hallmark of a high-level Pattern/Configuration.

Third, the momentum flows without obstruction — the qi of the Five Elements within the chart can be smoothly transmitted from one point to another, like water moving through an unimpeded channel, with no stagnation or breaks. For example, a continuous mutual generation chain of "Eating God generating Wealth, Wealth generating Officer, Officer generating Seal, Seal generating the self" allows the entire Destiny Chart to form a harmonious circular system; such a Pattern/Configuration possesses a grand and lofty character.

Fourth, flaws are resolved — as discussed in the preceding chapter on "illness and remedy Useful Gods," "having illness and having remedy" is itself considered a noble Pattern/Configuration. High-level charts are not necessarily free of flaws, but every flaw has a corresponding resolution; this "fulfillment achieved through adversity" possesses a depth that surpasses smooth sailing.

Low-level Patterns/Configurations are the reverse: the determining Ten Gods have insufficient force or have sustained partial damage, the coordinating protection is present but not precise, the flow of momentum is obstructed, and the flaws receive no effective resolution — the chart is not entirely failed, but its overall quality is mediocre.

VI. Transformed Patterns/Configurations: Special Structures Beyond the Ordinary

Not all Destiny Charts are amenable to the analytical framework of orthodox Patterns/Configurations. When the force of one particular element or category within the Five Elements is so extreme as to utterly overturn the normal logic of balance, the chart enters the domain of "transformed Patterns/Configurations." The core idea of transformed Patterns/Configurations is: when an imbalance can no longer be corrected, it is better to follow the prevailing current and grasp the extreme distribution of forces itself as the distinctive quality of the Pattern/Configuration.

The two most important types among transformed Patterns/Configurations are the Following Patterns/Configurations and the Dominant Patterns/Configurations.

Following Patterns/Configurations — When the Day Master is extremely weak, when the chart contains almost no forces to generate and assist the Day Master, and when the forces of restraint, dissipation, and exhaustion hold an overwhelming dominance, the Day Master is unable to sustain itself and instead "follows" the most powerful Ten Gods in the chart. One who follows Wealth takes Wealth as the dominant force, with the acquisition of wealth as the central theme of life; one who follows the Officer/Killing takes authority and submission as the central theme (the Pattern/Configuration of following the Officer is also commonly called following the Killing, since the Indirect Officer is the Seven Killings; both Officer and Killing represent forces that overcome the Day Master, and if the Day Master is already powerless to resist, following the Officer and following the Killing are essentially the same thing — traditional texts frequently use the terms interchangeably); one who follows the offspring (following the qi of the Eating God and Hurting Officer) takes talent and expression as the central theme. Those with Following Patterns/Configurations most dread the appearance, in their Major Luck Cycles and Annual Luck, of forces that generate and assist the Day Master — for if the Day Master receives even a little support and is unwilling to submit, yet is still insufficient to truly stand on its own, the very Pattern/Configuration of "following" is disrupted, producing enormous turbulence.

Dominant Patterns/Configurations — When the qi of the Day Master's own element is extremely flourishing and similar forces dominate the chart without competition, a dominant Pattern/Configuration governed by the Day Master's own Five Elements nature is formed. Traditional destiny studies name these by the Five Elements: Wood (Wood) is called the "Curved and Upright Pattern/Configuration" — Jia (Yang Wood) or Yi (Yin Wood) Day Masters born in spring, with vigorous Wood qi filling the chart, fully expressing the image of growth and flourishing; Fire (Fire) is called the "Blazing Upward Pattern/Configuration" — Bing (Yang Fire) or Ding (Yin Fire) Day Masters born in summer, with fire blazing mightily, radiant and brilliant; Earth (Earth) is called the "Agriculture and Harvest Pattern/Configuration" — Wu (Yang Earth) or Ji (Yin Earth) Day Masters enriched by the four seasons, with solid Earth qi pervading the chart; Metal (Metal) is called the "Following the Reform Pattern/Configuration" — Geng (Yang Metal) or Xin (Yin Metal) Day Masters when Metal commands the season of autumn, with Metal qi austere and severe; Water (Water) is called the "Flowing Downward Pattern/Configuration" — Ren (Yang Water) or Gui (Yin Water) Day Masters empowered in winter, with Water qi vast and rushing. Dominant Patterns/Configurations favor favorable cycles that follow the trend (generation or dissipation) and dread contrary cycles (restraint or exhaustion) — the exact opposite of the support-and-restraint logic of orthodox Patterns/Configurations.

The determination of a transformed Pattern/Configuration demands the utmost caution. Even the slightest trace of root qi belonging to the Day Master within the chart may cause the judgment of "following" or "dominance" to waver. Across the generations, destiny scholars have debated extensively over the conditions for the establishment of transformed Patterns/Configurations. Before beginners have accumulated sufficient experience, they should not rashly classify a chart as a transformed Pattern/Configuration — the great majority of charts should first be interpreted within the framework of orthodox Patterns/Configurations.

VII. The Pattern/Configuration School and the Strength-Weakness School: Two Perspectives That Are Not Opposed

In contemporary destiny-studies circles, methodological debates between the "Pattern/Configuration school" and the "strength-weakness school" have long persisted, often leaving beginners in a state of confusion that warrants clarification here.

The "strength-weakness school" refers to the analytical method described in Chapters Six and Seven of this book, which takes the Day Master's strength or weakness as its point of departure and uses the logic of support-and-restraint balance as its core — its central question is "what does the Day Master need?" The "Pattern/Configuration school" refers to the analytical method described in this chapter, which takes the determination of the Pattern/Configuration through the month command as its point of departure and uses the logic of Pattern/Configuration success, failure, and level as its core — its central question is "how is the overall structure of the chart constituted?"

On the surface, the two appear to belong to different theoretical camps and may even arrive at different conclusions regarding the selection of the Useful God for certain specific charts. Nevertheless, the author's position is that the two are not opposed systems, but rather analytical perspectives operating at different levels; only by employing them together can a more complete judgment be reached.

Strength-weakness analysis provides a "microscopic" diagnosis of elemental forces — what is the energetic state of the Day Master, what is the condition of the Five Elements balance within the chart, should one supplement or consume. This is the fundamental skill of destiny analysis and is indispensable. Pattern/Configuration analysis provides a "macroscopic" assessment of structural quality — what is the theme of the chart, in which direction does its momentum flow, how precise is its coordination, and at what level does it rank? This is the refinement of destiny analysis, elevating judgment from "good or bad" to "quality and character."

To use a simple analogy: strength-weakness analysis is like checking a person's health indicators to see whether they are within normal range (blood pressure, blood sugar, body weight); Pattern/Configuration analysis is like evaluating a person's overall temperament and developmental potential (character traits, areas of natural talent, the tone and caliber of their life). Neither can be dispensed with: a person whose health indicators are abnormal cannot fully realize their potential no matter how great it may be, while a person who possesses only physical health without direction or character will equally find it difficult to lead a distinguished life.

In practical application, the reader is advised to take strength-weakness analysis as the first step — first confirm the basic state of the Day Master and the directional need for balance; then use Pattern/Configuration analysis as the second step — examine the overall structure and quality of the Destiny Chart. When the conclusions of the two approaches agree, the judgment may be made with full confidence; when tension arises between them, a more careful weighing is required — and this very tension is often precisely the most worthy point of deep contemplation within a given Destiny Chart.

VIII. The Illumination of Pattern/Configuration Theory: The Holistic Aesthetics of the Destiny Chart

Reflecting on what has been discussed in this chapter, the most central insight that Pattern/Configuration theory offers us is perhaps not any particular rule for determining a type or any specific condition for success or failure, but rather a holistic mode of thinking about the Destiny Chart.

When first studying destiny analysis, we are accustomed to examining each pillar, each Ten Gods, and each cluster of Five Elements forces in turn — this is, of course, necessary foundational work. But Pattern/Configuration theory reminds us that a Destiny Chart is not an assemblage of parts, but an organic whole. No single Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch exists in isolation; its meaning depends on the role it plays within the overall Pattern/Configuration structure. The same Direct Seal star, in the Direct Officer Pattern/Configuration, is a meritorious guardian of the Pattern/Configuration; in the Eating God Pattern/Configuration, it may become an unwelcome idle deity; in the Hurting Officer Pattern/Configuration, it transforms into a strict teacher constraining talent. Divorced from the context of the Pattern/Configuration, to speak of a Ten Gods' "goodness" or "badness" in isolation is like evaluating whether a single note is pleasing outside the context of the whole composition — a judgment of very limited meaning.

This holistic perspective extends further to the understanding of destiny itself. Patterns/Configurations may be high or low, successful or failed, but there is no "absolutely good" and no "absolutely bad." A high-level Pattern/Configuration does not guarantee a life of smooth sailing — the higher the Pattern/Configuration, the more exacting the demands it places on the coordination of Major Luck Cycles and Annual Luck; should the cycles prove unfavorable, the fall from a high position can be all the more precipitous and severe. A low-level Pattern/Configuration does not condemn one to a life of hardship — though the Pattern/Configuration may be low, if the cycles proceed favorably, the subject may still live a solid and fulfilling life within their own domain. What Pattern/Configuration theory truly teaches us is not a simple grading of destiny, but an appreciation and grasp of the inherent structural beauty of the Destiny Chart — to understand that every chart has its own theme and melody, and to develop oneself in accordance with that theme is the finest life strategy of all.

Even more importantly, Pattern/Configuration analysis and the strength-weakness analysis described earlier are not in a relationship of mutual substitution, but rather two dimensions that complement and complete one another. Strength-weakness analysis provides the basic state of the Day Master and a microscopic diagnosis of the Five Elements balance; Pattern/Configuration analysis, building on that foundation, endows the chart with a macroscopic structural positioning and qualitative assessment. Only by employing both perspectives together can we see both the health of individual trees and the ecological pattern of the entire forest — and this is precisely the critical step by which destiny analysis moves from "technique" to "art."

At this point, we have established a complete analytical framework extending from Day Master strength and weakness to Pattern/Configuration structure. However, a Destiny Chart is not a static image — among the Four Pillars and between the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches there exists a wealth of dynamic interactions: the Punishment, Clash, Combination, Harm among the Earthly Branches, and the combination, transformation, conflict, and battle among the Heavenly Stems. The clashes and fusions of these forces continually reshape the energetic landscape within the chart. In the next chapter, "Punishment, Clash, Combination, Harm and the Dynamic Interactions of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches," we will explore in depth how these dynamic relationships affect the success or failure of Patterns/Configurations, the retention or removal of the Useful God, and the turning points in destiny triggered by Major Luck Cycles and Annual Luck — moving from a static structural analysis to a dynamic reading of change, the panorama of destiny studies will thereby become all the more three-dimensional and vivid.
